Economic overview

Gabon is a small country by population, barely 2.5 million people, but a large one by resources. Oil made its fortune for fifty years; manganese, of which it is the world's second-largest producer, timber and soon Belinga iron ore are taking over. Income per capita is among the highest on the continent, creating a solvent and demanding consumer market.

The Nkok special economic zone near Libreville is one of Central Africa's rare industrial success stories: since the log export ban of 2010, over a hundred companies there process timber into veneers, plywood and furniture. This precedent shows the country can make an incentive framework work and gives confidence to new entrants.

After the political transition of 2023, the authorities relaunched major projects: railway, Owendo port, dams, agricultural diversification. Gabon is also positioning itself in the green economy, carbon credits and ecotourism, with national parks covering more than a tenth of the territory. Gulf funds are interested in its green assets, ports and high-end real estate.

Why invest in Gabon

High income per capita

A solvent market, premium consumption and strong demand for infrastructure, housing and quality services in a capital that concentrates half the population.

The Nkok model

The Nkok special economic zone attracted over a hundred timber processors with 0% corporate tax for ten years: a precedent that reassures new investors.

Strategic resources

World's second-largest manganese producer, oil, Belinga iron ore, significant hydro potential, certified forest: assets sought by global industry.

A credible green economy

Carbon credits, FSC-certified forests, thirteen national parks, nature tourism: a unique position in Central Africa backed by international lenders.

Strategic sectors

Timber

Processing and export

Veneers, plywood, furniture, engineered wood. The log export ban guarantees supply to local mills and access to Asian and European markets.

Mining

Manganese, iron ore, gold

Local processing of manganese into alloys, development of Belinga iron ore, gold licences in the east and south.

Hydrocarbons

Oil and gas

Mature fields to optimise, redevelopment of deposits, oilfield services and maintenance in Port-Gentil.

Agro-industry

Palm, rubber, food crops, livestock

Reducing a food bill dominated by imports, with high local prices that make production profitable.

Infrastructure

Ports, rail, energy

Owendo port, the Transgabonais railway, Kinguélé and Ngoulmendjim dams, national roads.

Tourism and real estate

Ecotourism, hospitality, residential

National parks, lodges, coastline, high-end hotels and residences in Libreville.

Opportunities for UAE investors

Gabon offers a stable and readable framework for human-scale but highly profitable investments.

  1. Timber industry at Nkok

Processing units with secured supply, long-term exemptions and integrated logistics to Owendo port.

  2. Manganese and iron ore

Equity in manganese processing projects and in the development of the Belinga iron ore deposit.

  3. Premium real estate in Libreville

Residences, offices and hotels for a high-purchasing-power market where quality supply is scarce.

  4. Agriculture and livestock

Import substitution in a market where food prices are among the highest in the region.

  5. Energy and water

Concessions and public-private partnerships for hydro generation and water and electricity distribution.

Risks and how we manage them

Small market size

The domestic market is limited. We steer projects towards export or premium segments where local demand is solvent.

Political transition

The country is emerging from a transition. We closely follow the institutional calendar and secure contracts with stability clauses.

Operating costs

Labour and logistics are expensive. We build these costs into the models from the feasibility study.

Commodity dependence

Public revenue follows oil and manganese. We favour projects with private revenue.

Legal framework and ties with the UAE

Investing in Gabon

  • Investment Code with guarantees of capital repatriation and non-discrimination.
  • National Investment Promotion Agency (ANPI) and one-stop shop for company formation.
  • Nkok special economic zone: 0% corporate tax for ten years, customs and VAT exemptions.

The Dubai connection

  • Official visits and Gabon–UAE cooperation agreements in energy and infrastructure.
  • Interest from UAE sovereign funds in green assets, ports and real estate.
  • Air links via Addis Ababa and Istanbul; direct route planned.
  • Dubai as the relay for timber exports and financial structuring of Gabonese projects.

Dubai as your operating base

For a UAE investor, Gabon is best worked from Dubai. The city offers the tools that are often missing on the ground: a Free Zone holding company to carry the stake, banks used to African flows, a recognised international arbitration framework, tax treaties and investment protection agreements, and regular flights to the continent. For an entrepreneur or institution from Gabon, Dubai is symmetrically the gateway to Gulf capital, commodity buyers and Asian industrial partners. ABC Consultancy sits in the middle of that bridge: we know both shores and we speak to both.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nkok only for timber?

No. The zone also hosts pharmaceutical, metallurgical, agri-food and recycling industries. Any export-oriented industrial project can apply.

What is the entry ticket in Libreville?

High-end real estate starts around one million dollars for a small development; an industrial unit at Nkok ranges from two to ten million depending on the activity.

What is the minimum ticket to invest in Gabon with ABC Consultancy?

There is no fixed threshold: it depends on the sector and the format. An equity stake in a timber project runs into millions of dollars, whereas a trading or real estate operation can start much lower. In the first conversation we tell you honestly whether your budget allows a serious transaction.

How long does a transaction take?

Expect three to six months between the scoping note and signature for a trading or real estate operation, and nine to eighteen months for a mining project requiring approvals, in-depth due diligence and structured financing.

How is ABC Consultancy paid?

Through engagement fees set in the scoping note, possibly completed by a success fee at signing. We never take hidden remuneration from a counterparty: our only loyalty is to you.

Do I need a Dubai company to invest in Gabon?

It is not mandatory, but it is often the best solution: a Free Zone holding carries the stake, benefits from tax treaties and protection agreements, and repatriates dividends within a clear framework. We set it up with you.
