Economic overview

Malawi is a small landlocked country of 21 million people bordered by Lake Malawi, Africa's third-largest lake. A peaceful country with no conflict since independence, it remains one of the continent's poorest, with an economy dominated by subsistence farming and exports of tobacco, tea, sugar and macadamia.

In recent years the country has opened to mining investors: the rare earth deposits of Songwe and Kangankunde, Kanyika niobium, graphite, Kayelekera uranium and Kasiya rutile are among Southern Africa's most interesting critical mineral projects. The government has reformed its mining code and is seeking financial partners.

Commercial agriculture, macadamia, tea, sugar, pulses, and aquaculture on the lake offer opportunities for Gulf food security. Tourism on the lake shores remains underdeveloped. The UAE provides development aid and growing interest in critical minerals.

Risks and how we manage them

Currency and foreign exchange

The kwacha has been devalued and foreign currency is scarce. We structure in dollars with contractual repatriation mechanisms.

Landlocked

Logistics run through Mozambique or Tanzania. We build it into every project.

Climate

Droughts and cyclones affect agriculture. We favour irrigation and insurance.

Poverty

The domestic market is weak. Projects target export.

Legal framework and ties with the UAE

Investing in Malawi

  • Malawi Investment and Trade Centre: one-stop shop.
  • Special Economic Zones.
  • Mines and Minerals Act 2023.
  • Recognised arbitration.
  • Sector investment incentives.

The Dubai connection

  • Flights via Addis Ababa or Nairobi.
  • UAE development cooperation.
  • Growing interest in minerals.
  • Dubai as a trade hub.

Dubai as your operating base

For a UAE investor, Malawi is best worked from Dubai. The city offers the tools that are often missing on the ground: a Free Zone holding company to carry the stake, banks used to African flows, a recognised international arbitration framework, tax treaties and investment protection agreements, and regular flights to the continent. For an entrepreneur or institution from Malawi, Dubai is symmetrically the gateway to Gulf capital, commodity buyers and Asian industrial partners. ABC Consultancy sits in the middle of that bridge: we know both shores and we speak to both.

Frequently asked questions

Why Malawi?

For world-class mining assets still undervalued and export agriculture at very competitive costs, in a peaceful country.

Lilongwe or Blantyre?

Lilongwe for administration and institutions; Blantyre for trade and industry.

What is the minimum ticket to invest in Malawi with ABC Consultancy?

There is no fixed threshold: it depends on the sector and the format. An equity stake in a agriculture project runs into millions of dollars, whereas a trading or real estate operation can start much lower. In the first conversation we tell you honestly whether your budget allows a serious transaction.

How long does a transaction take?

Expect three to six months between the scoping note and signature for a trading or real estate operation, and nine to eighteen months for a mining project requiring approvals, in-depth due diligence and structured financing.

How is ABC Consultancy paid?

Through engagement fees set in the scoping note, possibly completed by a success fee at signing. We never take hidden remuneration from a counterparty: our only loyalty is to you.

Do I need a Dubai company to invest in Malawi?

It is not mandatory, but it is often the best solution: a Free Zone holding carries the stake, benefits from tax treaties and protection agreements, and repatriates dividends within a clear framework. We set it up with you.
