🇿🇦South Africa
The most industrialised economy on the continent, deep capital markets, world-class mining, a sophisticated financial sector and a legal system investors trust. South Africa is the natural base for any UAE group building a Southern African presence.
Economic overview
South Africa is Africa's second-largest economy and the only one with all the attributes of a mature market: a stock exchange, the JSE, capitalised at over a trillion dollars, a solid banking sector, insurers, pension funds, an exporting automotive industry, commercial agriculture and a network of road, port and airport infrastructure without equal south of the Sahara.
Mining remains a pillar: the country is the world's leading producer of platinum, chrome and manganese, and a major player in gold, coal, iron ore and diamonds. But the South African economy is far more diversified than its neighbours': financial services, retail, tourism, telecoms and manufacturing together account for most of GDP. It is also the African headquarters of most multinationals, which base their regional management there.
The country has faced real difficulties over the past decade: weak growth, high unemployment, power shortages, deterioration of rail and port logistics. These weaknesses open precise opportunities for private capital: independent power production, port and rail concessions, logistics, renewable energy. The government of national unity formed in 2024 has accelerated reforms and the opening to the private sector. The UAE ranks among the country's largest foreign investors.
Why invest in South Africa
A diversified, mature economy
Mining, manufacturing, finance, agriculture, tourism, services: no other African market offers this depth. An investor finds listed partners, international auditors, financing banks and world-class advisers.
Financial and legal infrastructure
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange, a robust banking system, independent courts and common-law-inspired business law. Contracts are enforced and disputes settled within reasonable timeframes.
Unique mineral wealth
Platinum group metals, gold, manganese, chrome, coal, iron ore, diamonds, vanadium: world-class reserves and an already established processing industry.
The gateway to SADC
The ports of Durban and Cape Town, road and rail links to fifteen Southern African countries: from Johannesburg you serve the whole region, from Namibia to Mozambique and from Zambia to Botswana.
Strategic sectors
Platinum, gold, manganese, chrome, vanadium
Exploration, mining, beneficiation and supply chains for the energy transition. The country dominates platinum group metals, essential for hydrogen fuel cells and catalysts.
Solar, wind, gas, storage
Independent power producers answering a chronic electricity shortage. The renewable energy procurement programme and grid liberalisation have opened the largest private power market on the continent.
Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban
Commercial, residential, logistics parks, hospitality and data centres. A deep, liquid market with listed property companies and professional management.
Citrus, grapes, nuts, meat, wine
Leading export-oriented commercial agriculture, aimed at Europe, Asia and increasingly the Gulf for food security.
Safaris, coast, winelands
Safari lodges, coastal resorts, urban hotels, Cape winelands: a global destination with an established hospitality infrastructure.
Ports, rail, corridors
Concessions and public-private partnerships on ports, freight rail and corridors, open to private capital since the Transnet reforms.
Opportunities for UAE investors
The UAE is one of the largest investors in South Africa. These are the deal formats we work on.
- Renewable energy IPPs
Utility-scale solar, wind and battery storage projects under long-term power purchase agreements with the national utility or with industrial and mining offtakers.
- Mining and beneficiation
Equity in platinum, manganese and chrome projects and in downstream processing: ferro-alloys, refining, battery precursors.
- Agricultural exports to the Gulf
Citrus, table grapes, macadamia nuts and halal meat with offtake contracts, commercial farms and packing facilities.
- Hospitality and real estate
Hotels, lodges and mixed-use developments in the major cities and tourist destinations, with recognised South African operators.
- Logistics and ports
Participation in port and rail concessions opened to private capital, logistics platforms around Durban and Johannesburg.
Risks and how we manage them
Load-shedding and rail deterioration have weighed on industry. We build a dedicated energy solution and a realistic logistics analysis into every project.
Regulation requires shareholding and practices favouring historically disadvantaged South Africans. We structure deals with qualified local partners from the outset.
The rand is one of the most volatile emerging currencies. We hedge flows and structure investments with currency in mind.
Crime rates are high in some areas. We select locations and partners accordingly.

Dubai as your operating base
For a UAE investor, South Africa is best worked from Dubai. The city offers the tools that are often missing on the ground: a Free Zone holding company to carry the stake, banks used to African flows, a recognised international arbitration framework, tax treaties and investment protection agreements, and regular flights to the continent. For an entrepreneur or institution from South Africa, Dubai is symmetrically the gateway to Gulf capital, commodity buyers and Asian industrial partners. ABC Consultancy sits in the middle of that bridge: we know both shores and we speak to both.

Frequently asked questions
Can a UAE investor own 100% of a South African company?
Yes, foreign ownership is free in most sectors. However, to work with the state, public enterprises or obtain certain mining rights, qualified local shareholding under B-BBEE is required. We structure it with you.
Johannesburg or Cape Town?
Johannesburg for finance, mining, industry and regional access; Cape Town for technology, tourism, agriculture and quality of life; Durban for logistics and the port.
What is the minimum ticket to invest in South Africa with ABC Consultancy?
There is no fixed threshold: it depends on the sector and the format. An equity stake in a mining project runs into millions of dollars, whereas a trading or real estate operation can start much lower. In the first conversation we tell you honestly whether your budget allows a serious transaction.
How long does a transaction take?
Expect three to six months between the scoping note and signature for a trading or real estate operation, and nine to eighteen months for a energy project requiring approvals, in-depth due diligence and structured financing.
How is ABC Consultancy paid?
Through engagement fees set in the scoping note, possibly completed by a success fee at signing. We never take hidden remuneration from a counterparty: our only loyalty is to you.
Do I need a Dubai company to invest in South Africa?
It is not mandatory, but it is often the best solution: a Free Zone holding carries the stake, benefits from tax treaties and protection agreements, and repatriates dividends within a clear framework. We set it up with you.
